The Global Oral Health Initiative

A Project of the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity

Reducing the debilitating nature of dental disease faced by those in need, worldwide.

This site has been created to provide exposure of the many wonderful ways dental professionals provide care and support to those who have dental and medical needs. We believe that poor dental health is debilitating in the sense that it affects overall well being and creates a psychological stigma. Please join us here and share your thoughts and personal experiences. If you have been a part of a program or mission that has helped people, feel free to upload your photos with commentary. We will all benefit.

Dental practitioners play an important role in regards to HIV/AIDS

Initiatives such as the Global Oral Health Initiative are imperative to the overall success of health care and in turn the furtherance of the development of countries around the world. Actually this has an interesting connection to my academic studies (MA in Political Science), which focus on the implementation and impact of health policy. I am currently working on developing a program for the Ukraine in regards to HIV/AIDS policy as a part of my graduate program at The Rockefeller College of Pu… Continue

"Teddy Bear Hospital" - is it really for stuffed Teddies alone?

In the Ein-Kerem medical campus - with a total of 3000 students - the School of Dental Medicine is one of the smallest schools. However, our students take an active part in all of the activities on campus, including a new one, that has become one of our best projects in the past two years.

"Teddy Bear Hospital" is a project that we have adopted from European medical students' organizations. The concept includes opening a "field hospital" in a school or community center, and asking kids to come… Continue

Next step for Uganda community

Thanks to all who have written about my experience and also that of Tani and Adam over in Uganda. I am trying to figure out what the next step should be. Initially, I had thought that it would be good to put together a proposal for a grant to fund a dental clinic in the new health center which is being built, but two major problems come into play...1) the building of the new health center has been stalled due to lack so funds, and 2) who would staff the clinic? I'm sure there are other issues, t… Continue

Uganda survey pictures

I just added some pictures from Uganda taken by Adam Baruch this summer. Adam, son of Detroit frater Murray Baruch, and Tani Shtull-Leber, are University of Michigan pre-med students who went to work in a health clinic near the Abayudaya community and were able to fulfill my request of performing a dental survey. They did a great job and I will be posting the results of that survey soon.

Volunteering Matters, Our experience in Bolivia

'' What can we do today, to help these beautiful but orphaned and unwanted children?'' this is what Yvonne and I hear as we walk into the first of our daily breakfast meetings in Cochabamba,Bolivia.

Immediately we both know that we are with a group that will fulfil every expectation (and probably more) that we had hoped for when we flew from London to Bolivia. We have joined 24 like minded wonderfully talented and philanthropic individuals from the USA on the 21 st Annual Humanitarian and Educa… Continue

Uganda update

Thanks Marc for making this website and for inviting me. I enjoyed writing about my experience in Uganda in the Alpha Omegan and if there's anyone who does not have access to the article let me know and I'll forward it to them.
I thought I'd provide an update on what's going on with dental health in the Abayudaya community now that it is about 7 months since my visit. I got an email from two University of Michigan pre-meds several months ago. Adam, son of Detroit AO frater Murray Baruch and Eyta… Continue

MY JHI Mission to Latvia

What a wonderful way, I thought, to complement my professional career. I have been afforded an opportunity to be a health care giver, a professional, a teacher, and make a good living from it. Now I had an opportunity to donate a week of my time, travel to a distant city, and potentially help members of the local Jewish community.

Riga, Latvia is a place of which most of my friends have never heard. This is unfortunate as Riga has historically played a significant role in the development of man… Continue

What a good friend said

Upon seeing this site up and running, a good friend wrote to me and said, "Marc, of course I care about stuff you are spearheading. Though I can't say that dental philanthropy is top on my list of causes, your involvement makes a world of difference in how I look at it."

Later that day, his wife called me about a professional issue. Her father had just been diagnosed with SCCA (cancer) of the jaw, and he was quite sick. I wanted to share some thoughts I had from this conversation and an earlier… Continue
